Ushio’s new 405 nm blue-violet lasers work in record freezing to near-boiling temperature range

Mass production of 175 mW single-mode laser diodes to begin imminently

Ushio has announced the development of two new laser products that have broken records for operating temperature range for 405 nm laser diodes. Achieved through advanced crystal growth technology and a unique optical confinement control structure, Ushio’s HL40161MG & HL40163MG violet-blue laser diodes function in extreme temperatures between -5℃ and +85℃. In addition, both lasers boast a high light flux density over the entire temperature range, and succeed in achieving stable, uniform beam characteristics with a low aspect ratio.

The HL40163MG blue-violet laser diode will enter mass production in the first quarter of 2023. The HL40161MG, expected to enter mass production in the second quarter of 2023, will feature a built-in photodiode in addition to the blue-violet light source found in HL40163MG.

Industries expected to adopt HL40161MG & HL40163MG violet-blue laser diodes

The laser diodes are expected to be adopted in a wide range of fields, including industrial sensors, medical equipment, measuring and analysis equipment, 3D scanners and 3D printers, where stable performance is required in a variety of environments.

Ushio will further expand its line-up of blue-violet laser diodes and has committed to the spread and performance improvement of blue-violet laser diode-equipped devices in an even wider range of applications.

How and why are 405 nm blue-violet laser diodes used?

405 nm single-mode laser diodes are famously known as the light source used for reading Blu-ray discs, but in recent years their applications have expanded to industrial sensors, medical equipment, and measuring instruments. In particular, for applications such as particle detection in semiconductor processes and 3D scanners for inspecting electronic components and substrates, there has been an increasing need for finer particle detection and higher resolution inspection, which requires illumination with high light flux density and uniformity. For these applications, shorter wavelengths reduce the focused spot diameter and high-power lasers with stable beam quality over a wider range of temperature conditions are required.
